Mostly G’s – The Simple Sophisticate

Style is a simple way of saying complicated things and you know this better than most. What sets you apart from the others is your ability to know where you’re going, what you’ll be doing, and dress accordingly. Costume party? Check. Ballroom dancing? Check. Bumming around the house in pj’s? Double check!

You are the owner of a truly magical inventory and everything you wear reflects this. You love fashion, no doubt, and everything you wear is planned before you leave your equally-gorgeous home. You have more clothes than anyone you know.

Prop & Poses: Diesel Works

From Dark to Light

Today is a day of firsts for me. In my earlier post, I shared the first tattoo I’ve worn here (that you’ve seen ;) ) and now, well, have a look!

I’m kind of psyched to be sharing these outfits, as well as these new pictures, with you; I’ve been working harder than ever on this blog, challenging myself to try different things, to accessorize more, and generally add more interest to everything I do. Maybe I’ve never worn a corset before (and that’s saying something as a three-year SL resident) but after some careful consideration as I put these outfits together I’ve come to realize .. I really like them!

And even better? Every outfit piece I’m using in this post (aside from the goooorgeous .:NV . corsets, foil eye makeup from League, and a pair of gacha earrings from The Arcade) has been in my inventory for weeks, months, or in a few cases, years! Maybe you won’t be able to duplicate these outfits exactly (who’d want to do that, anyway?), but the concept of reinventing yourself with what you have is especially helpful this time of year.

Dark to Light - D 600 ( I’m loving this picture so much! Have a peek at the full shot! )

So today’s outfits began, not with clothing or hair, eyes or shoes or jewelry, but with a pair of mesh bird cages from Diesel Works. The Nightingale’s Sorrow ( 15 poses) and Nightingale’s Glee ( 16 poses) pose props are so flipping neat! The poses are wonderful, adjustable, and so different between the two props that I had to contrast them in one thematic post. This post.

Dark to Light L 600 (I’m absolutely in love with these mesh birdcages! AAHHHH!!! )

I’m handling this post a little differently today. Rather than going through each outfit, piece by piece, I’d like you to pay special attention to the style cards below where I’ll list the items I’ve selected, the date I acquired them, and the notes I’m putting beside a few of these pieces. You don’t have to buy new things all the time. Use what you’ve got to try something new. Love your inventory. <3

*** ~ About Gloves: It’s no secret that I love gloves and wear them as often as possible but it’s so hard to find great gloves on their own! What I do is rely on my inventory. When I need gloves, I type ‘gloves’ into my search bar and just try likely things on until I see something that works. Many gowns and some full outfits come with gloves; I bet you’ll be surprised by what you find. :)

Blogger Challenge: What’s Your Beauty Base Zero? (Part One ~ Stylin’ Ain’t Easy)

Blogging isn’t easy.

I’m not writing this post to complain, far from it, but I would like to highlight the amount of work stylists undertake when putting an outfit together. Blogging said outfits is another challenge (but gosh, I love it) because the purpose is to highlight clothing in a specific, and often individual, fashion. The blog posts we love best seem effortless and perfect; it looks like a snapshot right out of someone’s second life. In truth, I’m certain that it’s the result of hours of work from beginning to end and I appreciate this process SO much. Behind every blogger, you’ll likely find a thorough and thoughtful individual who is just in love with SL fashion and wants to share this fascination with the world. Like me. :)

So this is the first installment of what I’m calling my “Stylin’ Ain’t Easy” tribute to SL blogging. It’s not definitive but it is a peek at how I operate. The first step for me is what I have named my BB-0 (Beauty Base Zero); it’s a term I’ve pillaged from book two of The Hunger Games trilogy because the concept was dead on. It’s where you start, imagining your nails are perfect, your hair is tied back and you’re staring into a mirror, or your closet, wondering what the heck you’re going to wear today.

( Not the most exciting shot, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t link you. :) )

I use Firestorm so this is my default saved outfit (the first of dozens of others I’ve saved for whatever reason) and if you haven’t upgraded to a viewer that allows you to save your outfits, let me say that it’s worth the discomfort of learning a new UI just to have this functionality.* This outfit includes HUDs I use when taking pictures (listed below) but the important thing to note is that with everything here, I have all I need to start putting together any outfit I desire.

Here are just a few tips for creating your own BB-0:

~ Underwear: Odds are anything you’re putting on afterward will cover these but I have to say that after a few mesh alpha-layer-not-covering-my-bits blunders, I always make sure I’m wearing panties. Just saying.

~ Basic Makeup: I don’t wear much as a rule but when I’m styling I always consider extra tattoo layers at a later time. I’ve occasionally forgotten the basics, though, and had to go back and start pictures again because of this lack. Ugh.

~ Simple Eyelashes: You can always add or change these once you’ve decided on the basics of ‘casual vs. fancy.’ Minimal eyelashes gives you an idea of what you have to work with before you begin layering. I hope it doesn’t need to be said, but please do your best to make sure eyelashes fit your eyes properly. If you need help with this do not hesitate to IM me, day or night. <3

~ Hair: This may seem like a no-brainer but I like beginning with a style that’s pulled back from the neck. You can always change it later but it’s helpful to make sure your jewelry is positioned properly before you go about covering it up with your lovely locks. **

~ Hairbases: First of all, I use an eyebrow shaper as my basic SL-driven hairbase. It gives my face definition and is just another way to squeeze a bit more individuality into my avatar. Hairbase tattoo layers are also something I recommend; even if you can’t see it under your current hairstyle, there’s -nothing- worse than tp’ing into a sim bald. Nothing.

~ Basic Shape: I have three shapes I use regularly in SL. One for mesh (smaller bust), one for system skirts (narrower hips, smaller bum, and less in the thighs), and the basic every day shape. These are NOT fun to confuse pre-clothing.

~ Nails: As much as they disagree with poses, as laggy as they can be in busy places, I really do love the look of them. Remember to take off your glove base if you’re going to put on actual gloves, though. If you always start with these you’ll just work it into your routine.

I hope this is enough to get you started! Stay tuned for the next installment of “Stylin’ Ain’t Easy.”

Check @ the FAIR!

Hello everyone!

I’d like to begin today by thanking my SL sister, the incredible Bean, for inspiring this post by dragging (okay, maybe not entirely dragging) me to the last installment of FAIR last week ( :( ) and pointing me toward these beautiful mesh gowns by Apple May Designs. I’m not sure what other people thought when they saw red and white side by side but my mind went IMMEDIATELY to Wonderland.

>.>

( Check my Flickr for an awesome widescreen shot of our showdown! )

Now ordinarily I’d have been all over the white option, anyone who’s peeked at my blog can see how much I love white and light neutrals, but there was something about the red that appealed to me. I wore a larger size of IKON‘s Kaleido eyes than usual (XL when my standard is M), changed my skin for a layered eyeshadow look, and added two pairs of eyelashes, two sets of gloves, and my boldest, curviest set from the incomparable Chop Zuey Couture Jewelry. The result, I think, is just a little creepy but you can’t deny that it looks neat.

The set was a ton of fun to put together (I can’t think of the last time I built anything!) and I’ve gone ahead and linked what I used at the bottom of this post. While it isn’t outfit-related, well, Bean and I wouldn’t have looked half as good against a white screen. :D

Confessions of a Former Band Geek

Music is my solace. Harmony, my heart. Certain chord progressions make me weak, or enraged, or giddy, or .. anything, really, because at a very basic level, music is feeling. It sinks into you, sometimes, and becomes part of who you are and how you see the world.

What I’m trying to say here, I suppose, is that there are some songs that you never forget or, specifically, that I will never forget. When other girls were listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Destiny’s Child, I’m slightly embarassed to admit that I spent my high school years obsessing over Dmitri Shostakovich’s fourth ballet suite and, of course, I knew every note in the Phantom of the Opera. One of my favourite CDs of all time, though, was Colm Wilkinson’s Stage Heroes, and the first track on THAT was his version of ‘I, Don Quixote.’

Listen to it sometime – you won’t regret it.

Now. The point of this confession is to provide a bit of context when I say that .. I am absolutely in LOVE with Chop Zuey‘s new Don Quixote Collection!

(Phew, that was a lot of text. Bring on the pictures!)

The story of Don Quixote is too long to share in a single blog post (and you’d probably throw something at me if I tried, admit it!) but I think we’re all familiar with the basic shape of it. An older gentleman becomes caught up in old, chivalric stories and as his mind begins to leave him, he assumes the identity of a knight errant to rid the world of injustice and evil. It’s clear, even from the beginning, that he’s not quite right in the head.

The fall collection, released last Saturday, captures the spirit of this story; strength, valour, beauty, and (of course) madness, all interpreted and presented in the form of truly stunning jewelry.

(Darn you, six-hundred-pixel-width restriction!)

With names like Gentle Insanities, Rochainte’s Curve, and Balsam for Madness, each set in the collection has its own story to tell. Together, as I hope to show you in the coming days, they become something more. Please, enjoy the pictures I’ve taken but make a point of viewing the collection for yourself at the Chop Zuey mainstore. They’re well worth the trip!

Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’!

Wow, okay, so I’m on a roll again! This is .. *counts* .. my SEVENTH post in a week and I hope you’re having as much fun reading my blog as I am writing and sharing some of my favourite fashion finds with you.

It’s probably pretty clear that I’m on a {mon tissu} kick right now (how not, with the Mon Tissu Blogger Search in full swing) but statistically it was bound to happen anyway. As anyone who knows me and sees me more than once a week knows, I wear this label ALL the time and today’s fantastic slouchy sweatshirt is no exception. I rarely wear black but when I do, I love dressing it up with metallic accents (like the Amorous Luna belt and these rocking accessories from MANDALA) – bonus points are also awarded for contrasting textures like velour, lace, and leather.

Something I read in Caoimhe Lionheart’s blog the other day absolutely struck a chord with me. For brevity’s sake, I’ll just go ahead and paste it at you:

“[...]wanted to add as an aside, and it’s a secret, so SHHHhhhhhh…. It’s okay to wear an item more than once. I know, I actually put that in writing. In the next days, I might wear one or two things more than once, if you don’t like it, your going to have to sue me, but keep in mind I buy my own blog items, so there might not be much left to sue for. I think re-using items has a functional purpose as well, it trains the eye that sometimes you see an item as belonging in one category, say, informal, but as you re-use it you are amazed to see, it does alright in the formal, or playful, or “whatever” category.[...]“

SHE SAID IT! AAAHHHHH!!!! The secret is out! I’m TOTALLY wearing my Cohimbra hair and grey Provence riding boots for you again .. and, you know? It feels good.

The bigger picture!

Mhmm, and this is where I rave about my beautiful new eyelashes! I didn’t think it was possible for my favourite IKON eyes to look any better but I was completely wrong. OMG! These lashes, from Miamai, aren’t new (well, not brand new) but goodness, they’re pretty! When I’ve worn mesh eyelashes in the past, I’ve always lost detail amping up to ultra graphics but these babies are just gorgeous no matter what I do AND they are available in a ton of different options from vibrant colours to feathers; from glitter (!!!) to intricate flowers and butterfly designs. I can’t wait to drop over again and share some more prettiness with you!

Vintage Fair 2012 ~ Sneak Peek (Part 1)

WOOO!

So the upcoming Vintage Fair is NEWS, ladies and gentlemen. You’ve seen the teasers; classic lettering in sepia and silver hues, elegant men and women in their fedoras and pillbox hats reminding us of a time when people were just that darned classy.

Sponsored by CHIC Management, the:

Vintage Fair (from Aug 4th – Aug 29th) will showcase 250+ brands each exploring inspiration from the vintage eras of 1920 – 1980. We will also this year be allowing ‘Antique’ fashions (pre 1920s). With new and exclusive items from every brand involved and music every day.

Since when were the 80’s vintage?! Is anyone else feeling their years today? I’ll get to 80’s-inspired goodness in a little while but for now, I’m ALL about the classy.

A larger image, just for you dahling.

Do you remember when sequins were glamourous? As a child of the 1980’s I truly do not, haha, but I yearn for the glory days of smoky jazz clubs and piano bars and a time where dressing to go out meant putting on MORE clothes, not less. This gown, created by CIA, absolutely took my breath away this morning. Just .. find it. Love it. Wear it with your swankiest jewellery and a sultry updo like this gem from Vanity Hair. Hotsy-totsy!

Check out this car, wow!

I know, I know. This vest has been popping up on the feeds for a while now and I’m sure the look has been adequately covered .. but not by ME! I love PurpleMoon for gowns, no one does it better, but don’t forget that there is also an incredible casual and semi-formal line in the mainstore! This set, a Vintage Fair Exclusive, is inspired by an American fashion icon .. you know who I mean. ;)  Do you own a pillbox hat yet? No? Why not nab this fantastic set from Laville? Bring the glory days back to your own corner of Second Life.
